Former Hammer Tony Gale believes the club must do all they can to keep Manuel Lanzini
“He’s their best player, without a shadow of a doubt. He is the one guy who can do something different to the other guys.
“What he does is he runs with the ball, I liken him very much to Luka Modric, who Slaven had when he was managing Croatia. He’s like that and those players are a rare breed.
“When I’m doing commentary games, I look for something different, and he’s certainly got it. I just hope we can keep him out the grasp of maybe Liverpool.”
“In my opinion, he’s irreplaceable. [West Ham] are a much better team with him in there, but we have to play with a different style.”
Michail Antonio hailed Javier Hernandez following his brace in the 3-2 defeat against Southampton
“What a massive purchase we’ve got in Chicharito! He is a fox in the box and he has shown the quality of player we have managed to bring in.
“We have just got to move forward. I’m getting back to my fitness and I’m starting to look sharp like I was at the beginning of last season, so hopefully I can keep progressing with that and start putting the ball in the back of the net.”
Hernandez has said the club can take the positives despite the stoppage-time defeat
“I will take confidence from my goals. They show the character of this team. We never give up and we tried to improve as much as we can following the last game [the loss to Manchester United].
“I’m happy that I scored two goals. You need to look on the bright side, at the positive things. Getting off the mark gives me motivation and it gives me confidence.”
Slaven Bilic refused to speak about some controversial decisions in the game
“I don’t want to talk about the penalty decisions, because there is no point talking about it. I only want to say that I’m very proud of my team and they showed everything I said – commitment, quality, character, team spirit and we never gave up.
“I don’t want to talk about the red card, either. I am the manager and I want to talk about the game and the decisions are going to lead to someone else talking about it.
“Of course the player is disappointed, but I am going to talk about the quality of the game and not about the decisions.
“It’s very hard to play with ten men, especially as we were already one goal down. We then conceded a second goal and it was difficult to come back.
“On paper it was very difficult to keep it to 2-0, but we showed character and commitment and that we are fit enough to do it for each other.”
