The death of a person whose body was found on the train tracks in Beverley is currently being treated as unexplained.

Trains between Beverley and Hull were brought to a standstill on Tuesday morning after the tragic discovery.

The British Transport Police have confirmed investigations into the identity of the person are ongoing.

A spokesperson said: “The incident is being treated as unexplained.

“Officers are making enquiries to establish the circumstances that led to the person’s death.

“Work is still ongoing to identify the person, and once we have a confirmation of age and gender of the deceased, and the family have been informed, we will make that available.”

The body was discovered just before 8.10am close to the Flemingate crossing.

Police officers and paramedics were called to the scene, but the person was pronounced dead.

It is not currently known whether the deceased is a man or a woman. The discovery of the body caused delays to trains running on the line.

A replacement bus service was organised to help stranded passengers get to their destinations.

Photos taken at the scene showed police officers on the tracks, before forensics teams were also spotted completing their investigations.

The incident caused shock and distress, with one rail passenger on an affected train reporting a guard was “reduced to tears” after seeing the lifeless body on the tracks.

Another man in Beverley commented on the large police presence and saw officers taking the body away from the scene.

He said: “There’s coppers everywhere. You never see this many police in Beverley.

“I can see they’re just taking the body away now.”
