Former US President Barack Obama has been applauded for his response to a terror attack in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday (local time).

One person was killed and more than a dozen others injured when a man allegedly rammed his car into a group of peaceful protesters following a white supremacist rally.

The FBI has since launched a civil rights investigation into the attack and the crime has been widely condemned by US officials.

Mr Obama was among them, tweeting a quote from Nelson Mandela.

“‘No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.’ – Nelson Mandela,” he wrote in a series of tweets.
